  • You are an analytical thinker. You know how to structure your own thinking, and the thinking of others, methodically weighing risks/rewards. You have a bias for action, while also taking the time to get to the root of the problem.

Outreach Associate, Data

About GreatSchools.org:

GreatSchools is the leading national nonprofit empowering parents to unlock educational opportunities for their children and support stronger schools in their community. Our website reaches half of all families in the U.S. with school-age children, as well as many teachers and education leaders. We are the only national organization that collects education data from all 51 state departments of education and the federal government and then provides analysis, insights and school quality ratings to parents, communities, advocacy organizations, researchers, policymakers and others. GreatSchools.org reaches 45 million users per year, 40% of whom are from low-income households. We also work to uncover bright spots in American education and catalyze discussions about equity.

We are a small but mighty cross-functional team that cares deeply about the diverse stakeholders we serve. We share a commitment to continuing to learn, grow, and improve together and as individuals.

We are seeking an Outreach Associate, Data, who is interested in the intersection of data and education to join our Data Operations team. Most of your work will impact the very first (and arguably the most important) phase of our data pipeline: data acquisition. In this role, you will gain a deep understanding of the education data landscape at the local, state and national level. We are always looking to acquire fresh data sets that measure educational outcomes, resources, or practices on the school, district, and state level. You’ll make use of previous acquisition methods and timing to predict when and how new data will become available based on the year before.

Although this position will work on the Data Operations team, collaboration and mentorship opportunities with our External Affairs team are highly encouraged and likely necessary for many of your responsibilities and continued growth.

What you’ll do:

  • Communicate (in HubSpot) and develop relationships with state/local education agencies or partner organizations to acquire data that isn’t available online.
  • Search for and download publicly available data from a variety of education agency websites.
  • Conduct media monitoring to stay on top of new public education data releases or developments.
  • Update and maintain the GreatSchools data catalog (in Airtable) to inform data landscape and prioritization, and make improvements to data acquisition processes as necessary.
  • Perform preliminary evaluations of acquired data sets to ensure GreatSchools is able to utilize and interpret them.
  • May perform a number of other similar or related duties which may not be specifically included within this position description, but which are consistent with the general level of the job.

Skills required:

  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently; must possess the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members in a remote environment.
  • Excited by finding creative solutions to operational challenges with a team and willing to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

Basic qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in a professional role that involved written communication with several external clients/partners.
  • Previous experience with CRM software, such as Salesforce or HubSpot (we use HubSpot).
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel.

Bonus points:

  • Basic proficiency in SQL, OR the willingness to learn basic SQL skills.
  • Basic proficiency in Python, R, other scripting languages, OR the willingness to learn basic programming skills.

This is a remote position, with the option to work from our California office in beautiful Uptown Oakland. This position reports directly to Josh Kuroda, Technical Program Manager – check out his README here!

Salary & benefits:

The salary for this position ranges from $45,000-$65,000 annually based on experience and location. In addition to salary, we also provide competitive medical, dental, and vision benefits, as well as a retirement plan with an employer match. Additionally, GreatSchools offers generous PTO + sick leave, thirteen paid holidays annually, along with a paid four-week sabbatical every five years.
